Japanese Names That Mean Wind: Sota, Hayato, Hayate and Fuka
Wind names feel light and full of movement. They are also very current. Names with the wind kanji 颯 are a strong trend in Japan right now, especially for boys. This article covers the wind names in our dictionary, the two kanji they rely on, and a few related names about flying and the open sky.
Two kanji for wind
風 (kaze, fū) is the everyday word for wind. In names it often has a soft, poetic feel, and it is more common in girls' names.
颯 (sō, hayate, satsu) means the sound of the wind, or something brisk and quick. In Japanese the word sassō (颯爽) describes someone striding along with confident energy, and that is the feeling parents are after. This character is a boys' name favourite.
Both are listed on our page of names meaning sky and wind.
Boys' names with 颯
How popular is 颯? In Meiji Yasuda's ranking of names for boys born in 2025, seven of the top 100 names contained it, including 颯 on its own, 颯太, 颯真 and 颯斗 (source, in Japanese).
- Sota: 颯太 combines the brisk wind with 太, "great, big". Sota is one of the best-loved boys' names, and the sound was 10th by reading in the same 2025 ranking. Its other spellings use other meanings, such as 蒼太 ("blue-green"), 奏太 ("play music") and 壮太 ("robust").
- Hayato: 颯斗 is "brisk wind" and "Big Dipper". The first spelling we list, 隼人, means "falcon person", another fast, airborne image.
- Hayate: 颯 on its own, or 疾風, literally "swift wind", meaning a gale. Hayate is the most direct wind name in the list: a sudden, rushing wind.
Girls' names with 風
- Fuka: 風花 is "wind" and "flower", and it appeared in the 2025 girls' top 100. 風花 is also a poetic winter word, read kazahana, for snowflakes drifting on the wind from a clear sky. That gives the name a delicate double image.
Other 風 names exist, such as 風子 (Fūko, "wind child"), but our dictionary doesn't list them yet.
Names about soaring and flight
If you like the wind for its sense of freedom, the "flight" kanji are worth a look too:
- 翔, "soar, fly", was the most-used kanji in boys' names for the fifth year running in 2025, according to Meiji Yasuda. You will find it in Haruto (陽翔, "sun and soar"), Shota (翔太) and Yuito (結翔).
- 翼, "wing", is the classic spelling of Tsubasa, a unisex name that simply means "wings".
- Kaito as 海翔 is "soaring over the sea", which pairs well with a sea breeze.
All of these are collected on our page of names meaning flight and freedom.
Sky names that pair with wind
Wind lives in the sky, and sky names have the same open, airy feeling:
- Sora, 空 or 蒼空, "sky" or "blue sky"
- Haruka, 遥, "distant, far-reaching", like a wind carrying over a long way
- Yuma as 悠真, which uses 悠, "calm, eternal"
How wind names sound in Japanese
Most wind names are bright and quick to say. Sō-ta and Ha-ya-to are two and three beats, and the long ō in Sōta is part of the name. In everyday English spelling it is simply dropped, so you will see Sota. You can hear the beats spelled out on each name page, and our guide to morae explains why the long vowel counts as its own beat.
A note on 颯 and kanji rules
Names registered in Japan may only use kanji from an official list. 颯 is on it, as the many 颯 names in recent rankings show. If you are choosing a name for a child who will be registered in Japan, always confirm the current rules with the local city office.
Pairing wind names
In Japanese the surname comes first. A wind name next to a landscape surname creates a little scene, such as Takahashi Hayate ("high bridge" and "gale") or Mori Fuka ("forest" and "wind-flower").
